Abolition of ACNC
Further to the Federal Government’s election promise to abolish the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission, in July 2014 the Department of Social Services issued an “Options Paper” seeking community feedback to its policy initiative as well as suggesting an array of alternate arrangements and principles that might facilitate the Federal Government’s desired outcome.  Feedback responses closed on 20 August 2014.

With the greatest respect to the “Options Paper” from a social policy perspective the “wood seems to have been lost in the trees” in dealing with this important issue.

In essence:
  • accountability and transparency of the sector and those operating in it is vital;
  • tax concessions (i.e. society foregoing tax revenue that would otherwise be applied for social benefit) should only continue to be available to those operating in the sector where efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of outcomes which have charitable benefit for society can be demonstrated;
  • reduction of regulatory red tape and utilisation of modern open technologies (ie, websites and the internet) are to be encouraged
